I think that this is a terrific example of rendering. Shadow Maps - This is what stands out to me as the most important, they control how shadows play on characters to get a stylized anime shading, the shadows don't play by the rules of 3d and that is hugely noticeable. Shader - for outlines, flat colors and highlights The characters also switch through meshes for some of their special abilities such as Millia's hair shown below. High poly characters - needed for good smooth shadows, and surprisingly smooth silhouettes Even cartoons on television don't look this good, and those are pre-rendered!
